Air quality monitoring in Canada is vital for public health, environmental sustainability, and economic prosperity. Real-time data provided by the Air Quality Index (AQI) guides individuals and policymakers to make informed decisions during periods of poor air quality, safeguarding well-being and reducing adverse effects. In both professional and personal settings, indoor air quality significantly impacts well-being and productivity. Employers increasingly recognize the importance of providing a comfortable and healthy work environment to maximize employee satisfaction and performance.

Sterling IAQ Consultants, being early adopters of technology, have been using a customized web application for storing, generating, and providing indoor air quality (IAQ) reports to clients. However, the application was outdated in terms of both technology and user interface.

Improving UI and UX with modern SW UI tools is essential for a better user experience along with tools for data validation, while updating operational processes is essential for enhancing turnaround time. Incorporating GUI-based search and discovery operations, along with visual presentation tools, optimizes functionality and user experience, ensuring efficiency in navigating complex systems.

Enhancing IAQ Reporting: Data Management and Secure Access:

The new IAQ reporting web application is built on top of a highly configurable engine used for data management and reporting for clients, buildings, and tenants. It introduces new report templates for LEED, HVAC, and Radon Testing, ensuring comprehensive coverage of indoor air quality parameters. The system also adds a level of data validation and threshold check for all survey parameters to flag any abnormal and junk data which might pop up from IAQ testing.

The system also has the functionality of interactive dashboards which act as an added service to the clients. The clients have the option to do comparative study on different IAQ parameters for a building, multiple buildings or buildings against city averages. Email notifications to the Clients upon report availability provides a mechanism to alert the client on new reports generated further enhancing accessibility of the reports. The updated interface boasts a modern look, while enhanced searchability for both standard and statistical reports facilitate quick insights. Additionally, the comparison search feature offers a side-by-side view, enabling informed decision-making.

Solution:

Our IAQ reporting web application is crafted following the AGILE methodology, ensuring rapid development cycles and alignment with objectives. Developed on a modern software platform and contemporary UI design tools, it offers efficient processing and improved turnaround time from data input to report generation. Powered by cutting-edge technology stack including React, Java Spring, PostGRE SQL and hosted on MS Azure, our solution promises robust performance and scalability. Using Azure's cloud components like PostgreSQL Database, Monitor, Log Analytics, NGINX Proxy Server and Cloud Storage ensures optimal functionality, performance monitoring, and data security. The application also uses oAUTH from Microsoft AD B2C Entra Services which allows the users to login into the system using their Microsoft accounts.

Step-by-step breakdown of the process of application development using Agile:
  • Requirement Gathering: Analyze and finalize requirement specifications.
  • System Design: Design data model and application components, create semi-functional prototype.
  • Development: Build web applications according to design specifications.
  • Application Testing: Thorough in sprint testing as per test plan to ensure integrity and compliance.
  • User Acceptance Test (UAT): Gather feedback from select users, refine application.
  • Go-live & Launching: Prepare for launch, ensure smooth transition for users.
Empowering Indoor Air Quality Management:

By streamlining processes from requirement gathering to system design, development, testing, and launch, we have ensured an all-in-one and efficient solution. The result is a user-friendly, secure, and highly functional application that empowers clients to make informed decisions regarding their indoor air quality. Moreover, by utilizing a robust technology stack and cloud components, we have provided Keystone with a scalable and reliable platform.
